Dear Music Fans,

One of the most famous and celebrated Djs and turntablists in the world is back with a slamming new album “The Architect”, this time blending Hip Hop, scratching and classical music.

DJ ROB SWIFT is part of the biggest Dj group “the X Ecutioners” on the planet and toured and worked with everyone: Red Hot Chili Peppers, Linkin Park, Fat Joe, Everlast, Mike Patton (Faith No More), Cypress Hill, Wu Tang Clan, Eminem, Good Charlotte, Xzibit, Dan The Automator and even truly forward-thinking Jazz legends such as Herbie Hancock and Bob James.

It’s ROB SWIFT’S debut release on Mike Patton’s (Faith No More) Ipecac Recordings label, a perfect fit as both men have been challenging the notion of music for years. They have previously toured together promoting Patton’s Peeping Tom project and their collaborative effort General Patton Vs. The X-excutioners.

Retour au cinéma pour Marshall avec un projet gore : Shady Talez !

The JokerMINEM

MOST IMPORTANT MUSICAL SPECIMEN

tk weighs in:

What is the most important band or artist of the decade?

I pondered this question during my entire stroll down Gower Ave. from Sunset to Santa Monica (all 0.5 miles) and here’s what I came up with. These aren’t controversial choices but who needs controversy when there’s a possibility for accuracy?

First of all, let’s address the other decades.

50s- Elvis, hands down

60s- Beatles, hands down

70s- Led Zeppelin (or Pink Floyd)

80s- Michael Jackson

90s- Nirvana

And that brings us to this decade. As of now, I have narrowed it down to these artists:

Radiohead

Animal Collective

Eminem (or Lil Wayne or Jay-Z… consumers of important rap, help me out here)

Thoughts? Ideas? Nuggets of insight?

ck weighs in:

It’s hard for me to go against your selections. Radiohead is definitely up there. In the 2000s, they released the phenomenal Kid A, the incomprehensible Amnesiac (I never really ‘got it’), the return-to-prominence Hail to the Thief, and the overrated (but revolutionary) In Rainbows. Those four albums can stand up against any artist’s production in the last 10 years. Regardless of whether you think they’re the best band of all time or hopelessly overrated, the “pay-what-you-want” marketing campaign for In Rainbows definitely stuck Radiohead in the cultural lexicon for good and symbolized the downfall of the music industry throughout the decade.

Animal Collective is another exciting choice. Their entire discography is in the 2000s. Since the turn of the century, Animal Collective has released studio albums Spirit They’re Gone, Spirit They’ve Vanished (2000), Danse Manatee (2001), Campfire Songs (2003), Here Comes The Indian (2003), Sung Tongs (2004), Feels (2005), Strawberry Jam (2007), and Merriweather Post Pavilion (2009), as well as four EPs, two live albums, and eight singles.

In addition to being prolific, however, Animal Collective has been one of the most creative outfits of the decade. I am admittedly a latter-half AC fan; I hardly listen to anything before Sung Tongs. That being said, even listening to just those four albums shows the width and depth of their creative sound. Who can you possibly compare them to? Who are Animal Collective’s influences? Neutral Milk Hotel, maybe? The Beach Boys? Where does a song like Peacebone come from? Animal Collective’s importance is wrapped in the creativity of their output. They get better and better with each album, as they careen toward accessibility without leaving behind their weirdness.

I’m not sure if I can agree with you on Eminem. Yes, he was huge. Yes, he was culturally relevant. And yes, he was a pretty good rapper. But he was inactive for 3+ years, and he was a shell of his former self on 2008’s Relapse. He was also the “shocking musician” du jour, which can help with publicity, but rarely leads to a lasting legacy. He seems more interested in being controversial than being innovative.

I would, instead, submit for your consideration, one Justin Timberlake.

At the turn of the decade, there was no bigger pop group than ‘N Sync. Their second album, No Strings Attached, dropped in 2000, driven by the success of initial single Bye Bye Bye. 2001 saw the release of disappointing third album Celebrity, and the group went on hiatus in 2002.

Timberlake took this hiatus as an opportunity to conquer the music world on his own, with 2002’s Justified. The album took the world by storm, propelling JT to immediate stardom. Since then, he’s been dating movie stars, hosting Saturday Night Live, causing wardrobe malfunctions, voicing characters in Shrek sequels, and generally living large.

After the death of Michael Jackson (RIP), the world is starving for a superstar musician. I have long believed that Justin Timberlake is that man. I even wrote a column for my college newspaper titled, “Justin Timberlake: The new King of Pop“. His music is ubiquitous and his presence can make even the Black Eyed Peas sound respectable. What more do you need from the MOST IMPORTANT MUSICAL SPECIMEN of the 2000s?

What do YOU think? Register your opinion in the comments.

Is 50 Cent Losing Steam?

Wasn’t is just yesterday that when a new 50 Cent album came out, everybody was talking about it? Wasn’t is just yesterday that 50 Cent would have 3 top ten singles on the charts that hyped his album so much that everybody was ready to hear the complete new album? With so many delays and no big hit singles on the radio catching steam, 50 Cent’s new album Before I Self Destruct has seemed to be on the back-burner for people who in the past have been loyal fans. Who out there even knew that this Tuesday, 50 Cent’s Before I Self Destruct album finally was released? Projections came in today from hitsdailydouble.com that projects that 50 Cent’s latest project will only sell about 150,000 to 160,000 copies in his first week in stores. This is a concerning number as 50 Cent has been known in the past to sell a million copies in its first week in stores. In 2002, his debut album Get Rich or Die Trying sold 872,000 copies in its first week, which spawned hits like In Da Club, Wanksta, P.I.M.P, 21 Questions, and Many Men. It went on to sell over 10 million records and in many eyes became a classic album in hip hop. When nobody thought he could get any bigger, his second album The Massacre was released in 2004 and sold an incredible 1.15 million copies in its first week. Even his third album Curtis which is now known for its Soundscan battle with Kanye West, which he ended up losing, even sold a solid 695,000 copies in its first week in stores. So what has happened to 50 Cent? Yes it seems like 50 Cent is still always in the news, but it’s not for his music anymore….

But why is this? Can 50 Cent still make a hit song? As of November 19th, 50 Cent’s new single Baby By Me, is currently 33rd on Itunes music charts. It hasnt even come close to his catalog of hits from before, and its unheard of, for him not to have a top 10 single going into the week of his new album. At one point in 2005, it didnt seem like 50 Cent could miss when making a hit record. He became the first artist to have three singles in the top 5 on the Billboard charts in one week. Yes I believe 50 Cent can still make quality music but it seems like every time I hear about him in the news these days it’s all about what I like to call “publicity feuds”. He picks fights with the likes of Jay Z, Rick Ross, Young Buck, and The Game to name a few to what it seems like is just a ploy to keep himself relevant. In Mtv’s Hottest MC’s list of 2009, they put him at #9 and the only reason he is even there, is because of his “publicity and web presence”. For an artist that at one point seemed unstoppable, it truly doesnt even seem like it’s about the music anymore. 50 Cent will always stay in the news with his sometimes entertaining ploys but will I ever get an album like Get Rich or Die Trying again? Probably Not

To look at his new album Before I Self Destruct, 50 Cent goes back to his roots and gives his fans the aggressive content that they are used to. With only 3 featured artists on his new album, it seems like 50 Cent is focused to show that this album is more centered around him. Stand out tracks are So Disrepectful, Psycho, Crime Wave, and Gangsta’s Delight where we see glimpses of old 50 Cent. Fans who love his club records will love Baby By Me and Do You Think About Me but none in my mind come close to his old classics.  Overall I see this album as 3rd overall in his discography, behind Get Rich or Die Trying and The Massacre, and in front of Curtis. It is overall a great album and people should definitely listen to it but it is sad to get to the end of the album and realize that we will probably never see the work of Get Rich or Die Trying again.

So is 50 Cent really losing his edge, or have we just put him on such a high pedestal that he just cant reach any higher. In 2008 he still had a net earning of $440 million, noted all of that was not made off of music. 50 Cent has definitely lost some of his stature with his 4th album but he has definitely not become completely irreverent in the music industry. People all around the world still respect him for his music and would love to see him tour behind this new album but he is not as big as he once was. Maybe 50 Cent has peaked and the days of having so many hit singles all at once are of the past. Jay Z’s 11 number one albums has to be noted as it just comes to show how hard it is to stay on top for so long. 50 Cent’s 4 albums have been good but you start to wonder how many more albums we will see from him. 11 albums seems unreachable to so many artists these days including 50 Cent. It will be interesting to see what the future has in store for 50 Cent but it seems like the days of In Da Club  are far behind him.

The White Panda

Some good mash ups…this group doesnt switch songs as often as mashup artists like girl talk, the milkman, or super mash bros.  all of the stuff i’ve heard tends to stick to a small number of songs the entire way through.  This one’s called “Eminem Front”.  It uses samples from the who, eminem, and clipse together.  I can’t find it on youtube but here’s a mediafire link

http://www.mediafire.com/?fhaxzy2yn4v

and a hypem.com link if you just want to listen http://hypem.com/#/track/956918/The+White+Panda+-+Eminem+Front+Eminem+vs+The+Who+vs+Clipse+

They also have one called “Golden Encore” that i like but I cant find it on youtube or any other website besides hypem.com.  Anyway, its a mash up of Jay-Z’s “Encore”, OneRepublic’s “Apologize”, and The Whitest Boy Alive’s “Golden Cage”. i’m not sure if an mp3 is available anywhere but you can give it a listen here:

Purple Pills FTW !

[Intro]

(Uhh, yo,yo,yo,yo,yo,yo)

[Chorus Eminem]

I take a couple uppers

I down a couple downers

But nothing compares

To these blue and yellow purple pills

I been to mushroom mountain

Once or twice but who’s countin’

But nothing compares

To these blue and yellow purple pills

[Eminem]

Cool, calm, just like my mom

With a couple of valium inside her palm

It’s Mr. Mischief with a trick up his sleeve

To roll up on you like Christopher Reeves

I can’t describe the vibe I get

When I drive by 6 people

And 5 I hit

Ah shit

I started a mosh pit

Squashed a bitch

And stomped the foster kids

These shrooms make me hallucinate

Then I sweat till I start losing weight

Till I see dumb shit start happenin’

Dumber than Vanilla Ice tryin to rap again

So bounce, bounce, c’mon bounce(shooting)

I said c’mon bounce

Everybody in the house with a half an ounce

Not weed I meant coke dumb ass sit down

We don’t bullshit, better ask around

D12 throws the bombest bash in town

Bizarre, your mom is passing out

Get her ass on the couch ‘fore she crashes out

[(Kon Artist) & Kuniva]

Fuck that, someone help Denaun

He’s upstairs naked with a weapon drawn

(Hey Von You see me stepping on these leprechauns?)

It gotta be acid cuz the X is gone

(Ya I took them all dog with some parmesian And I think my arm is gone)

It’s probably numb

Young, dumb, and full of cumm

*choke* And I think he ’bout to swallow his tongue

(Scary ass it was a false alarm

You think I’m ’bout to die when I just got on)

Well stop acting stupid

You so high

That you might wake up with a guy

On some new shit

[Eminem] Ewwwwww!

I think I did too much

This substance equals cuffs

Red pills, blue pills, (and green)

Big pills (That’s ill)

Mescaline

[Chorus]

[Hook Eminem]

Dirty Dozen

80 of us

Shady brothers

Ladies love us

That’s why our baby mothers

Love us but they hate each other

They probably wanna take each other out

And date each other

Some-, something, something, something

Something, something, something, something

Uhh I dunno

[Proof]

Pop pills

Pills I pop

Pop two pills

On stilts I walk

Snort two lines that were filled with chalk

Thought it was Incredible I killed the Hulk

I wanna roll away

Like a rollerblade

Until my eyes roll back in my skull for days

And when I’m old and gray

Look for dope to smoke

and op in dope

packin my nose with coc

*cough cough cough*

am i supposed to choke

Had an accident when the Trojan broke

Ahh, poor baby

Born by whore lady

Now I gotta Strangle it

(You’re crazy!)

[Swifty]

I pop four E’s at one time

And I don’t need water when I’m swallowing mine

(Ey you got any shroom?)

Does Bizarre smoke crack?

I can’t get job

Because my arms show tracks

Why the hell you niggas think I rap?

I do it just to get your company hijacked

If you like smack

Then I might too

(Swift, chill)

I just wanna get high like you

And I don’t give a damn if they white or blue

Speed, shrooms, down the valiums

Even smoke weed outta vacuums

I just copped some and I’m going back soon

[Chorus]

[Bizarre]

I’m at rave

Looking like a slave

High off chronic

Gin and tonic demonic

Body smelt like vomit

Pussy poppin’, acid droppin’, dope heavy guy

Heroine mescaline pencil leads

wanna try?

Blue pills, golden seals

Got Bizarre actin’ ill

Drugs kill (Yeah, right)

Bitch I’m for real

Shut your mouth you dirty slut

You know you want it in your butt

I’ll put it in your cunt

That Bizarre nut

[Chorus]

[Hook]

Dirty Dozen

80 of us

Shady brothers

Ladies love us

That’s why our baby mothers

Love us but they hate each other

They probably wanna take each other out

And date each other

Some-, something, something, something

Something, something, something, something

Uhh I dunno
